“Because of the grace given me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the Gospel of God…” (Romans 15:15–16); (1 Timothy 5:17-25)
Holy Orders is that Sacrament by which men are ordained to carry out a particular function of the Ministerial Priesthood of Jesus Christ. Deacons serve in liturgical roles at Mass, including the preaching of homilies, as well as looking after some of the temporal needs of the Church. Bishops are the successors of the Apostles, through whom Christ continues to minister to His Church and the world. Priests are men ordained to share in the bishop’s ministry in a particular way, thus being conformed to and acting in the person of Christ (i.e., in persona Christi). Only a few priests become bishops, but every bishop must first be ordained a priest.
